About Como City

Como was orginally situated on nearby hills but was moved to the current location by Roman emporer Julius Caesar.
Como city is the birthplace of many historical figures, including the poet Caecilius, writers Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, Pope Innocent XI, Alessandro Volta (the pioneer of electricity) amongst others. At the end of World War II, after passing through Como on his escape towards Switzerland, Benito Mussolini was taken prisoner here.
Como is easily walkable although it can be busy at times. There are plenty of bars and restaurants and things to do – including a walk along the lakeside promenade (photo above), take the funicular cog railway ride to top of mountain and view the Gothic Cathedral.

Como city is at the southernmost part of Lake Como.
Como is served by train from Milan taking about an hour.
There are numerous ferries from Como city connecting to many other parts of Lake Como.
Como Cathedral
Como Cathedral (duomo) is one of the last Gothic cathedrals to be built in Italy.
It was built on the former site of a Romanesque cathedral which was begun in 1396, 10 years after the foundation of Milan Cathedral.
The west front of the cathedral was built between 1457 and 1498 and features a rose window and a portal between two statues of Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, natives of Como.
The cathedral has a Renaissance transept, the apses and the choir are of the 16th century and the interior has a series of nine important tapestries, woven at the end of the 16th century, in Ferrara, Florence and Brussels. There are also a number of 16th-century paintings by Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari.

Como Villas
Villa Olmo
Originally commissioned in 1725, Villa Olmo is composed of a huge park and many buildings.
Villa Olmo’s park extends for almost five hectares (12 acres) and includes 780 trees including a pair of horse chestnut trees, one planted in 1664 and the other in 1716 .
The villa is a half hour walk from the centre of Como

FERRY INFORMATION
Como has regular ferries to many parts of Lake Como.
From Como to Bellagio is 40 minutes on a fast ferry, 2 hours 30 minutes on a slow ferry.
Tickets can be bought directly from the ferry service website, except for fast boat tickets which must be bought at the ground station.
