Built in 1568 as the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, Villa d’Este was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1873, becoming a favorite destination for the European aristocracy.
Inside the hotel there are works of art such as Country Scenes by Rosa da Tivoli and Coronation of Psyche by the Canova school.
Beautiful gardens surround Villa d’Este represent one of the best examples of Baroque scenography in Lombardy and Italy. However, in the 25-acre park there are also other styles: Renaissance, picturesque and romantic.
Forbes magazine elected Villa d’Este the best hotel in the world.
These days the hotel and gardens are closed to the public. The only way of visiting is either to book a stay at Villa d’Este or book a meal at the restaurant.
