Porta dell’Orologio (Clock Gate) in Salo, Italy
Salo’s roots reach back to Roman times, but it truly flourished during the Venetian Republic.
This proud past is still visible in its stately palazzi, refined squares, and graceful arcades that line the waterfront.
Salo is perhaps most famously known for its complex role in modern history – during World War II, it was the seat of Mussolini’s short-lived Italian Social Republic (the so-called Republic of Salo).
Today, though, the town feels far removed from those turbulent days. Visitors are drawn by its sophisticated yet laid-back atmosphere: pastel-colored buildings, elegant boutiques, family-run trattorias, and a lakeside promenade that’s one of the longest and most beautiful on the lake.
